Popiel I
Popiel I to poprzednik Popiela II.W różnych źródłach znajdujemy iż Popiel I kazał zbudować wspaniały pałac na środku jeziora Gopło, po przeniesieniu stolicy. Miał on być władcą rozwiązłym, spędzającym całe dnie w towarzystwie kobiet. Opuścił on Kraków, rezydencję przodków, przenosząc dwór najpierw z Krakowa do Gniezna, a następnie do Kruszwicy.

Popiel the Second King of Poland careless of matters of state gave himself over to all manner of dissoluteness so that his Lords despised him and call him the Polonian Sardanapa lus He feared therefore that they would set one of his kinsmen in his stead so that by the advice of his wife whom he loved he feigned himself sick and sent for all his uncles Princes of Pomerania being twenty in number to come and see him whom lying in his bed he earnestly prayed that if he chanced to die they would make choice of one of his sons to be King which they willingly promised in case the Lords of the kingdom would consent thereto The Queen enticed them all one by one to drink a health to the King as soon as they had done they took their leave But they wercscarcegotoutof the King's chamber before they were seized with intolerable pains and the corrosions of trial poison wherewith the Queen had intermingled their draughts and in a short time they all died The Queen gave it out as a judgment of God upon them for having conspired the death of the King and pro secuting this accusation caused their bo dies to be taken out of their graves and cast into the lake Goplo But by a miraculous transformation an innumerable number of rats and mice did rash out of those bodies which gathering together in crowds went and assaulted the King as he was with great jollity feasting in his palace The guards endeavoured to drive them away with weapons and flames bnt all in vain The King perplexed with this extraordinary danger fled with his wife and children into a fortress thai is yet to be seen in hat lake of Goplo over against a city called Crusphitz whi ther he was pursued with such a number of these creatures that the land and the waters were covered with them and they cried and hi sed most fearfully they en tered in at the windows of the fortress having scaled the walls and there they devoured the King his wife and children alive and left nothingof them remaining by which means all the race of thu Poland princes were utterly extinguished and Pyast a husbandman at the last was elected to succeed

Takim przypadkiem zginął dom panujących.

DRINKING OT HEALTHS In a book called Healthe sSicknesse or A commodious and brief discourse prouing the drinking and pledging of Healthes to be SSafull and vtterly uni lawful unto Christians l y Wia Prynne printed at London 1628 the following anecdote occursIt is recorded of Popelus the Second King of Poland that having incurred the displeasure of his Nobilitie, through his ill government for which they intended to depose him, he fained himselfe to be very sicke, by his Queen's aduice and thereupon sent for twenty of the chiefe princes of Pomerania who had the principall voyce in the election of the Polonian kings, to come and visit him in his sickness which they did accordingly. The king, upon their coming, requested them to elect his sonne to the kingdome after his decease, which thing they answered they would willingly doe, if the rest of the nobilitie would consent unto it. The queene in the mean time provides a cup of sudden poyson of purpose to dispatch them and presents it to them all to drinke the king her husband's health. They, to testify their love and allegiance to the king, dranke off the cup, as their manner was, unto his health, but to their own confusion and immediate death and to the subversion of all the stocke and race of the Polonian princes: a sodaine and fearful, yet just judgment of God, upon these princes, who were much addicted to the drinking of healthes in former times. But loe the infinite justice of God on both hands. Out of the dead and poysoned carcasses there issued such infinite troopes and swarmes of rattes and mice as chased Popelus his wife and all his children fronf place to place, both by sea and land till at last they were forced to flee to the strong Castle of Graeconia where they were devoured and eaten up of these rattes and mice, in despite of guard and gareisons, and all those artes and pollicies of fire and water workes that were used to secure them.
